The M3 ModellingPlatform deliversopen-source data,modelsand visualizationfor in-depth analysis of Canada's energy system.
The M3 Modelling Platform is an open-source, integrated energy system analysis tool built around three core components: data, models, and visualization tools. Designed to foster transparency and collaboration, all M3 models and tools are either currently freely accessible, or soon will be, on GitLab and GitHub.

Canada’s First Open-Source Integrated
Energy Modelling Platform
Energy Modelling Platform
Open Data & Assumptions
The M3 Platform includes all data required to run the M3 models. This is achieved through CODERS, an annually updated, open-source database.
Open Models
M3 includes 9 models, each bringing different capabilities in answering energy policy questions at a range of spatial scales.
Open Visualization Tools
All models in M3 are linked to the IDEA visualization platform. IDEA is an open-source tool designed to help modelers, researchers, and decision-makers visualize energy modeling inputs and results intuitively.
Features and Capabilities
Comprehensive and Holistic Design: Built by the Sustainable Energy Systems Integration & Transitions Group at the University of Victoria on open-source software, the M3 Modelling Platform is designed to represent multi-scale (municipal to federal), multi-sector (power, transport, buildings), and multi-vector (electricity, fuels) energy systems. This is being achieved through developing:
- Integrated Tools: Building and open-source releasing linked workflows between input data, models, and output visualizations.
- Extendable and Adaptable Framework: Designing all models to accommodate new policy questions and building interoperability between models to ensure they can be combined to address diverse research and practical questions.
- Transparent and Reproducible: All input data and assumptions, input data and results will be released open-source.
Usage and Community Engagement
How to Use and Get Involved:
- For Analysts and Developers: Check out our model input data in CODERS, the M3 model code and documentation, or the IDEA visualization tool here. As more models are released into the Platform, additional links to model code and documentation will be added.
- For Policymakers and Policy Researchers: Contact us at [email protected] if you are interested in getting support in using these open-source tools for a policy assessment.
- For Modellers: If you are interested in adding your model or tool to the platform, contact us at [email protected].
